Microcement for Contractors and Home Builders

You are not looking for another product. You are looking for fewer trades on site, fewer callbacks after handover, and something on the spec sheet that the other three bidders do not have. Microcement is all three, which is why it is worth the trouble of learning.

What it does to a schedule

• No demolition on a refit. It goes over sound existing tile and sound concrete. That is a demo day, a dumpster and a disposal line gone from the estimate, plus the unknown you always carry when you do not know what is under the old floor.
• One trade instead of three. On a wet room you are not sequencing a waterproofer, a tiler and a grouter around each other. One crew, one system, one set of dates.
• About 2 mm of buildup. No threshold changes, no doors to undercut, no appliance heights to rework, no transition strips between rooms.
• Continuity. A floor can run from the entry through the kitchen to the living room with no break. That is very hard to do any other way and clients notice it immediately.

What it does to your callback list

Grout is a large share of finish complaints in the first two years. It stains, it cracks at changes of plane, it goes grey at the shower floor, and none of it is your fault but all of it is your phone call. There is no grout in this system.

Chips and damage are repairable in place rather than requiring a matched replacement tile you no longer have in the garage.

The two systems, and which one to spec

On new build with a good slab, a lot of your interior floor area is Core. On a refit, on anything over tile or plywood, and on every bathroom, it is Reinforced. Spec it that way from the start — the difference is roughly double the material cost and it is not a line you want to discover halfway through.

Material only, with the 10% overage we build into every estimate. Note what happens at the small end: because you cannot buy half a pail, a 40 sq ft shower floor costs the same $2,401 as the 100 sq ft surround. Bundle rooms onto one order. You do not need a trade account
