Build Coat is the structural layer in the Reinforced system. It goes on over a prepared, primed surface and does two jobs: it adds strength, and it gets the surface flat before the finish coats. Walls or floors, it works on both.

You mix it and trowel it on, pulling it tight to level the surface. The fiberglass mesh is bedded into the first coat, then covered with a second.

You need Build Coat for anything wet, anything outdoors, and any floor that is not bare concrete — including straight over old tile. The Core system does not use it.

Coverage: 275 sq ft on the first coat, 310 sq ft on the second for the 5 gallon bucket. 135 sq ft on the first coat 155 sq ft on the secon coat for the 2.5 gallon bucket.  Coverage varies based on substrate and application thickness.

Available in a 5-gallon or 2.5-gallon pail. The coverage above is for the 5-gallon pail. The 2.5-gallon covers half.

How to apply

5 steps

  1. 1

    Sand and vacuum

    For floors, use a sander to remove loose and excess sand. Vacuum until clean and dust free.

  2. 2

    Mix and mist

    Mix the product well with an electric mixer. Lightly mist the surface with water.

  3. 3

    Trowel it on

    Apply with a steel or plastic trowel, pressing firmly and pulling the product tight.

  4. 4

    Let dry

    2 hours.

    Second coat

    Sand the surface smooth before the second coat. Repeat with a second build coat.

Coarse is the base texture. Medium sits in between. Smooth goes further and covers more per pail.

Pail size

For build coat and microcement. A 2.5-gallon pail covers half as much. It suits small jobs, but costs more per sq ft.

How much to mix, and how much color

Enter the area you are covering. We work out how much Build Coat to weigh out for each coat, whether you need a whole pail or only part of one, and how much colorant goes into it. Includes 10% extra for waste.

Enter an area to see the amounts.

  • Weigh the Build Coat first, then weigh the colorant into it. Mix for 3 minutes with an electric mixer.
  • Color is set by weight, so coat 1 and coat 2 come out the same shade even though coat 1 uses more material.
  • Mix one batch at a time and reseal the pail. Do not tint a whole pail if you only need part of it.
  • Use these amounts only. Microvella needs less colorant than other microcements, so other brands' charts will come out too dark.
  • Coverage varies based on substrate and application thickness.
