Microcement Walls: Where They Work and How They Go On
Share
A microcement wall is one surface from corner to corner. No joints, no tile edges, no trim strips. At about 2 mm thick it goes over the wall you already have, so you are not losing room or rebuilding anything.
Most interior walls are Core
A dry interior wall — a living room, hallway, bedroom, a single feature wall — takes the Core system: primer, two coats of microcement, two coats of sealer. That is the cheapest microcement job there is, around $8 a square foot in materials on a reasonable area.
A wall becomes Reinforced when it gets wet or when it moves: bathrooms, showers, splash zones, anything outdoors, and any wall going over tile. Reinforced adds fiberglass mesh bedded into a structural build coat.
What it goes over
Drywall, plaster, tile, concrete, MDF. The rule everywhere: the surface has to be sound and it has to be still. Fill holes. Fix anything loose. If a wall has an active crack, find out why before you coat it — 2 mm of microcement follows what is underneath, it does not hold it together.
Coarse or smooth
This is where walls get interesting, because it is a finish decision rather than a structural one.
Coarse carries a fuller grain. It levels and fills, and it reads as more textured and more mineral from across a room.
Smooth is the fine finish coat. You can lay it flat and even, or work it so it clouds and moves. Most feature walls end in smooth.
A common approach is coarse to build and level, then smooth as the surface you see.
One wall, or the room?
Worth thinking about before you order, because of how the pricing works. Products come in whole units. A single 150 sq ft feature wall lands near $12 a square foot; a 400 sq ft room lands near $8 — same products, just less left in the pail.
If a feature wall is a test before committing to more, that is a fine reason to pay the premium. If you already know you want the room, order it as the room.
