Microcement in a Kitchen: Floors, Walls and Splashbacks

A kitchen is close to the best case for microcement, for one unglamorous reason: grout in a kitchen is miserable. It holds grease behind the hob, it stains under the sink, and it is the first thing that makes a good kitchen look tired.

Microcement has none. Floor, splashback and walls can run as one continuous surface.

Which parts need which system

The floor is Reinforced. Kitchens are high traffic, they get wet, and the floor is usually going over tile or plywood rather than a bare slab.

The splashback is Reinforced. It is a wet, hot, greasy zone and almost always going over existing tile.

Dry walls away from the sink and hob can be Core.

In practice most kitchens run Reinforced throughout, which is simpler to order and avoids a change of system mid-surface.

Use smooth behind the hob

Coarse carries a fuller grain, which looks good on a wall and is harder to wipe down. Behind a hob, on a splashback, on anything you will clean weekly — use the smooth microcement as the finish coat.

And seal it properly. Two coats, every job. A splashback meets oil and acid more often than any other surface in the house.

Over existing tile

Kitchen tile carries grease, and primer will not grip through grease. Degrease the whole surface and rinse it before anything else. Tap every tile; hollow ones come out and get filled. Fill deep grout lines so you are starting flat, then let the mesh in the build coat span the rest.

Why kitchens price well

Microcement costs less per square foot the more area one order covers, because products come in whole units. A kitchen usually has a floor, a splashback and some wall — enough combined area that you use most of what you buy.

A splashback on its own is the expensive way to do it. A splashback plus the floor, off one order, is not.
